INDUSTRY NEWS | ANALYSIS

Kroger’s traffic has dropped 0.66% over the last three months.

Kroger reported higher sales in its first quarter as growth in digital operations and retail media helped offset pressure from transportation costs and price investments. The grocery retailer said total sales for the quarter were $46.1 billion, up from $45.1 billion during the same period a year earlier. Excluding fuel and Vitacost, sales increased 0.5%. Identical sales excluding fuel rose 1%, while adjusted ecommerce sales increased 19%. Kroger also said profit from its Kroger Precision Marketing retail media business grew more than 20% during the quarter. In May, the retailer announced it was working on a plan to cut prices on thou- sands of items. The company will test price reductions before rolling them out more broadly and phasing them into stores. —Bill Wilson C&S supplies its Winn-Dixie stores and other regional and independent grocers from a 1 million-square-foot warehouse in Miami. Earlier this year C&S said it had become the primary supplier for Sedano’s Supermarkets, which operates 32 locations and is the largest Hispanic grocer in Florida. Anthony Hucker, CEO of Winn-Dixie, who had spearheaded the acquisition of Southeastern Grocers from Aldi along with C&S, will continue to serve as a special advisor during the coming months, C&S said. Raymond Rhee, who has been chief financial officer of Winn-Dixie, will serve as interim CEO until the transaction closes. Winn-Dixie “will continue to have an office presence” in Jacksonville, C&S said. Winn-Dixie operates the majority of its stores in Florida and also has locations in southern Georgia. During the past year it has sold or closed most of its locations in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Last year Food City acquired the last three Winn-Dixie locations in Alabama, while Rouses Markets acquired 10 Winn-Dixies in Louisiana and Mississippi. —Mark Hamstra to expand the company’s retail footprint, “especially in the Southeast.”

Kroger’s traffic has been declining In July it ranked 13th among 16 retailers

JULY was not a good month for Kroger in terms of foot traffic, the Cincinnati Business Courier reports. The Cincinnati-based grocer’s traffic volume dropped 0.22%, the fourth-biggest decline among 16 grocery retailers invest- ment firm Jefferies studied. Kroger ranked 13th in foot traffic for July. Traditional grocery retailers struggled last month as foot traffic remained generally

flat, rising just 0.01%. Discount, premium and mass merchandisers fared better. Club stores were the only format that performed worse, but retailers like Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club rank in the top seven of the 16-retailer analysis, according to the Courier . Kroger’s traffic has dropped 0.66% over the last three months, signaling the decline could represent a troubling trend.

C&S to buy majority stake in Winn-Dixie Wholesaler eyes further retail expansion “especially in the Southeast”

C&S WHOLESALE GROCERS said it has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Winn- Dixie in a transaction expected to close early next year. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Keene, N.H.-based C&S last year had acquired a minority stake in Jacksonville, Fla.-based Southeastern Grocers, the former umbrella company operating Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, as part of a consortium of private investors. The inves- tors had bought the stores from Aldi, which had previously acquired them for conver- sion to its own hard-discount format. Aldi retained about 220 Winn-Dixie stores, which it is still in the process of con- verting to the Aldi banner, leaving about 170 locations under the Southeastern Gro- cers umbrella. Southeastern Grocers has since closed several of those stores, and

earlier this year it converted the remaining Harveys to Winn-Dixie. The acquisition of The Winn-Dixie Co. adds another retail banner to C&S’s port- folio, which includes Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, D&W Fresh Markets, VG’s Markets and other banners acquired in the SpartanNash acquisition, as well as Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union. “The collective insights gathered during our C&S-SpartanNash integration have enabled us to further enhance our support of customers—in all formats—across the United States,” said Eric Winn, CEO of C&S. “Our combination has already strengthened the skills and capabilities we need to win in the marketplace while clearly demonstrat- ing that our continued growth has been greatly enhanced with our transformative M&A.” He said he sees ongoing opportunities

Grocery Outlet also invested in reshap- ing value perception. Potter said during the call that the near-term synthetic promo- tional support the company provides drives customers into stores. This move has been especially effective around high-traffic occasions like the Super Bowl and Easter, where event-driven promotions helped drive meaningful traffic gains. “This is an important first step in restor- ing comp performance as the momentum from our improving opportunistic prod- uct mix begins to translate into stronger transaction trends,” Potter said. “As we invest, we’re managing the impact on gross margins through disciplined promotional targeting and our ongoing focus on improv- ing our mix.” Potter said he expects the investments to total $20 million this year. Grocery Outlet is also sharpening value messaging through its extreme value cam- paign. This work focuses on making the retailer’s value proposition unmistakable, highlighting the significant savings custom- ers can find on branded products—often at meaningful discounts to conventional retailers—and reinforcing the excitement of the treasure hunt experience. To support this, the retailer drives awareness through targeted at-home and digital campaigns that bring its deals and product discovery to life. “In the market, we’re focused on aware- ness-based media,” Potter said. “In store, we’re simplifying signage and elevating key value items to make savings more visi- ble, easier to navigate and more compelling at the shelf.” Potter believes the three initiatives with the singular focus of improving value are beginning to drive a meaningful, positive customer response. “The trends we’re seeing in traffic are consistent with the initial stages of stabili- zation that we would expect at this point,” he said during the earnings call. Grocery Outlet is also executing a store refresh program. The company completed 34 refreshes during the first quarter. Improvements in layout, signage and merchandising are part of the refresh and make the shopping trip easier and reinforce value more clearly. Grocery Outlet expects to complete 100 store refreshes by the end of the year. —Bill Wilson

Grocery Outlet is also sharpening value messaging through its extreme value campaign.

Grocery Outlet looks at fair quarter performance as just the beginning A three-pronged strategy is in place and already producing results

GROCERY OUTLET PRESIDENT and CEO Jason Potter detailed the retailer’s comeback strategy during the first-quarter earnings call in early August. The plan appears to be gaining traction. The grocer reported a modest increase in second-quarter sales while compara- ble-store sales remained negative. Net sales increased 1.1% to $1.19 billion for the quarter that ended July 4. Transactions increased 1.8%. Potter said the company made meaning- ful strides to increase the mix of branded opportunistic products in stores. Grocery Outlet’s best opportunistic deals offer sav- ings of 70% compared with conventional retailers. “These savings, when paired with the excitement of a treasure hunt experience, provide a compelling experience that our customers love,” Potter said during the call.

Since the start of the year, Grocery Outlet has increased its opportunistic mix by nearly 2 percentage points with mean- ingful improvement across inventory, shipments, variety and sales. The retailer has made meaningful progress by improv- ing sourcing, increasing product visibility and helping operators further differentiate their stores. The work includes upgrading systems and reporting, expanding supplier out- reach, shortening delivery times, testing short-dated offerings and engaging suppli- ers more directly at the leadership level. This allowed Grocery Outlet to move quickly in the first quarter on excess inventory from several top-selling brands, delivering significant savings for customers while creating high-margin, high-volume opportunities for the com- pany and operators.

Retailers who represent or imply that a price is static when it in fact varies by individual are at risk of misleading customers.

FTC seeks public comment on surveillance pricing Agency says the undisclosed collection or use of personal data for the use of pricing could be in violation of the FTC Act

THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION announced in mid-August it is seeking public comment on an enforcement policy statement regarding personalized pricing, which is the use of personal data to set prices according to the amount that a com- pany believes an individual consumer is willing to spend. “When consumers see a listed price, they expect it to be same price that every- one else sees, not the retailer’s estimate of how much they are willing to pay based on their personal data,” said FTC Chair- man Andrew Ferguson. “The FTC does not have the legal authority to ban per- sonalized pricing in all circumstances, but businesses that fail to tell consumers how their personal data is being used to set a price may be in violation of the FTC Act and other laws we enforce. We are seek- ing public input on this draft statement, which would put businesses engaged in or considering personalized pricing on

notice that the Trump-Vance FTC will not hesitate to enforce the law in this space.” This is the latest in a series of actions by the Commission against businesses that mislead consumers with hidden fees and surprise charges. Consumers expect prices for products and services to change based upon supply and demand, not their web surfing habits or buying history, the statement notes. Retailers who represent or imply that a price is static when it in fact varies by individual are at risk of misleading cus- tomers. Informed consumers might take measures to avoid higher personalized prices, such as using a virtual private network or private browsing session, or simply avoiding retailers engaged in per- sonalized pricing altogether. The statement goes on to note that the undisclosed collection or use of personal data for the purpose of personalized pricing could violate the FTC Act, which

prohibits unfair or deceptive practices in the marketplace. Once the statement has been pub- lished in the Federal Register , the public will have 30 days to submit comments electronically. The Commission vote authorizing the Federal Register notice was 2-0. Three states have already banned surveillance pricing in grocery stores: Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut, which law covers all retailers. Meanwhile, New York, California, Delaware and Mich- igan are looking to pass similar measures. In New Jersey, a one-year moratorium was placed on installing new electronic shelf labels while the state studies their financial impact. In Maryland, grocery stores with at least 15,000 square feet and third-party grocery delivery apps cannot charge localized or individualized prices based on user data. —Supermarket News Staff

Healthy meal solutions demonstrate strong momentum, and Sprouts continues to increase that offering with health- and attribute-driven meals.

Sprouts left confused about shopping behaviors What worked last year is not really producing this year, and a challenging macro environment is not helping

SPROUTS FARMERS MARKET conducted its affordability test during the first half of the year, producing mixed results. The grocer is using learnings from the test to refine its second-half approach, but a chal- lenging macro environment only adds to the complexity. During the test, Sprouts found most actions drove better unit movement, while broader traffic response developed more gradually than expected. “Our acceleration efforts have identified new tactics to drive sales that should ben- efit us in the second half, and the data we are building is increasingly useful across the business with more in-depth customer behavior and preferences,” Sprouts CEO Jack Sinclair said during the earnings call last week, according to a transcript AlphaSense provided. June proved particularly tough for the retailer in terms of year-over-year com- parisons. In June 2025, a disruption of the natural and organic supply chain sent cus- tomers Sprouts’ way, and the grocer had a strong produce showing for the month,

according to CFO Curtis Valentine. The cyclospora outbreak has impacted how customers shop, and Sprouts has felt an impact. Sprouts’ affordability strategy follows a multi-pillar approach: assortment, price and promotion and personalization. Assortment is showing the most growth. Healthy meal solutions demonstrate strong momentum, and Sprouts continues to increase that offering with health- and attri- bute-driven meals. The grocer prices family meals at $29.99 and all fresh-made salads under $9. Sprouts’ private-label brand has intro- duced innovation in healthy essentials. The company recently launched seed oil-free potatoes, which are now a top category seller, according to President and Chief Oper- ating Officer Nicholas Konat. In terms of price and promotion, the task has proven more difficult in moving the customer. Some efforts produce good basket and unit velocities, but the company needs to learn more about “how we price and how we message,” Konat said.

The third pillar of Sprouts’ affordability strategy involves personalization efforts. Vendor participation in the program just started. “We’re certainly ramping, but it’s in its early stages,” Konat said. “As we build out the capability, as we continue to invest in tech- nology, that will be something we continue to push over the next number of years.” However, Sinclair said the macro environ- ment has been difficult to read. “Clearly, grocery prices are going up,” he said during the earnings call. “Gas prices have gone up and down and they’re clearly putting pressure on. So, we’re trying to sec- ond-guess exactly where this is going to play out.” Valentine said what worked last year simply isn’t working this year. “It’s just a little bit harder,” he said. Lower-engaged customers present the biggest challenge. These shoppers came to Sprouts last year under unique circum- stances but now spread their trips out more and don’t visit at the same frequency as they did in the past. —Bill Wilson

customers prefer to use the AI-based tools, which is helping the retailer refine its approach to drive better returns. ALBERTSONS BANKS ON ACI EDGE The news follows Albertsons’ report last month of soft sales results in the first quar- ter. In its earnings call with analysts, the retailer said it was counting on its ACI Edge technology strategy, which consolidates the company’s operating divisions into four regions and is built around the use of AI across the organization, to drive about $200 million in savings this year and next. The initiative includes four enterprise AI priorities: the digital customer experience, merchandising intelligence, labor optimiza- tion and supply chain optimization. Albertsons’ success in driving bigger baskets using AI comes as more and more retailers are expected to follow suit and leverage AI on the path to purchase, accord- ing to a new report from eMarketer. The report projected that AI platforms could drive up to 13.7% of U.S. retail ecommerce sales in 2029, representing a $225.21 billion opportunity. The eMarketer report estimates that about 79.6 million people will use AI plat- forms and assistants to shop in 2026, up 25% over last year. The total number of consumers using AI to shop will increase to 109.3 million in 2030, according to eMar- keter estimates. The increase will be largely driven by millennials, who said they like to use AI tools to compare prices, control spending and streamline the shopping experience, among other functionality, according to the report. —Mark Hamstra food and grocery retail sectors. All food retailers surveyed and more than 97% of grocery retailers said AI is vital to the future of brick-and-mortar operations. All food retailers and 94% of grocery retailers said they are either using AI or planning to integrate the technology. Nearly half, 47.6%, of food retailers and 41.2% of grocery retailers, said they are planning aggressive AI deployment within the next 12 months. The push comes as retailers face per- sistent problems with shrink and theft, particularly at self-checkout. Retailers surveyed by VoCoVo reported

Albertsons’ success in driving bigger baskets using AI comes as more and more retailers are expected to follow suit and leverage AI on the path to purchase.

Albertsons drives bigger baskets using AI Average tickets rise in double digits, boosting ROI on tech investments

INVESTMENTS in AI-powered shopping experiences are driving Albertsons’ basket sizes up an average of 10% for standard conversational searches and 26% for more complex searches, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal . Jill Pavlovich, senior VP of digital shop- ping experiences, also told the WSJ that the Boise, Idaho-based retailer is consolidating multiple customer-facing AI functions, including Ask AI, Plan AI and Buy AI, into a more streamlined service. The goal is both to smooth the customer experience and to drive better returns on the investment in the technology, she said.

Although Albertsons did not realize an immediate return on investment from its rollout of AI-driven shopper experiences, Pavlovich said the tools did drive larger baskets as soon as the tools were rolled out. The largest baskets have been especially notable when customers use AI tools to help build recipes and find ingredients that meet their specific dietary preferences, she said. “All of a sudden they’re shopping across categories, across items, not spearfishing for that single item that they need one by one,” Pavlovich told the WSJ . She said Albertsons has begun to gain a greater understanding about how

Grocers want to use AI for anti- theft, worker abuse The tech is on the verge of exploding over the next year

U.S. FOOD AND GROCERY RETAILERS are moving quickly to adopt artificial intel- ligence as operators look for new ways to address theft, self-checkout losses, employee safety and productivity chal- lenges, according to new research released in August from retail communications

technology company VoCoVo. VoCoVo’s 2026 survey of 250 U.S. retail decision-makers and 500 consumers found broad agreement among food and grocery retailers that AI will play an important role in the future of physical stores. The research included respondents from the

that shoplifting has increased 61.9% for food retailers and 58.8% for grocery retailers following the introduction of self-checkout. The report did not specify the time period over which the increases occurred. More than four in 10 retailers are already using AI as part of their anti-theft opera- tions, including 42.9% of food retailers and 41.2% of grocery retailers. More retailers expect to follow. Among companies that have not yet adopted AI for theft prevention, 38.1% of food retailers and 44.1% of grocery retailers said they plan to introduce AI anti-theft technology during the next year. The priorities differ somewhat by retail

sector. Food retailers are focusing on AI-powered self-checkouts and smart shelving, while grocery retailers are put- ting greater emphasis on reducing customer friction and false alarms and improving coordination between store employees and security personnel. WORKER SAFETY EMERGES AS ANOTHER AI PRIORITY Retailers also see AI as a potential tool for dealing with another problem inside stores: customer abuse of employees. All food retailers and 79.4% of grocery retailers surveyed said they were con- cerned about verbal and physical abuse of

employees. Grocery workers experienced an average of 58.7 hostile incidents annu- ally, compared with 28.9 incidents in food retail, according to the report. The issue is also affecting employee retention. During the past 12 months, 57.1% of food retailers and 32.4% of grocery retailers surveyed said employees had resigned as a direct result of customer abuse. Retailers increasingly believe technology can help address the problem. More than 70% of food retailers and 88.2% of grocery retailers said AI will play an important role in reducing workplace abuse over the next year. Food retailers are showing particular interest in AI-powered closed-circuit tele- vision, with 60% favoring the technology. Grocery retailers are putting more empha- sis on smart shelves and inventory sensors, cited by 46.7%, as well as automated inci- dent alerts, cited by 30%. GROCERS LOOK TO AI BEYOND SECURITY The report found that retailers are also looking at AI and connected technology as ways to improve store operations and employee productivity. Among grocery retailers, 40% said better product and system training would pro- vide the biggest productivity improvement, while 35% pointed to adding employees during peak periods. Food retailers were more likely to cite additional supervisor support on the sales floor, with 41.2% identifying it as an oppor- tunity to improve productivity. Retailers are investing in connected technologies designed to improve commu- nication, employee support and consistency in customer service, according to the report. Those systems could also provide the infrastructure for AI-powered alerts and real-time decision-making. The findings suggest that the industry’s AI discussion is moving beyond whether retailers should invest in the technology and toward how it can be used inside stores. For grocery operators, the near-term focus appears centered on some of the industry’s most persistent challenges: con- trolling shrink, improving self-checkout, protecting frontline employees and finding ways to make store operations more effi- cient. —Supermarket News Staff
